The Evolution of the MET and its Impact on Global Fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art also referred to as the Met is one of the most esteemed cultural institutions in the entire world. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), which is situated in New York City, was established in 1948 and has since expanded to rank among the biggest and most significant art institutions worldwide. The Met is host to one of the most recognised annual events in the fashion industry, the Met Gala, in addition to maintaining a massive collection of art and artefacts spanning the entire world. Eleanor Lambert, columnist and former Vogue editor-in-chief, Diana Vreeland, and current Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour were the brains and heart behind the Met Gala and the fashion industry, forging a close-knit relationship and ushering in this evolution. Eleanor Lambert established the Met Gala to fundraise for the Irene Lewisohn and Aline Bernstein-founded Costume Institute and honour the commencement of its annual exhibition.

The Met Gala, regarded as the Oscar Night of the fashion industry, includes far more than the funds raised and social media impressions. It is a major display of fashion as art and art as fashion, and it has the biggest influence on the global fashion industry. Regardless of the fact that the Oscars, Grammys, Globes, and other fashion events are alluring as well, the Met Gala has a sense of mystique that surrounds it, unlike any other event. Some refer to this event as “the party of the year” and “the Oscars of the East Coast” is sumptuous beyond comparison. Three aspects of this special event’s mystery can be identified: the carefully chosen themes, the selective guest list, and the fact that it isn’t broadcast on television beyond the red carpet. As the guest list grew to include the biggest stars of the era, including Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross, Elton John, Cher, Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, Halston, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Bianca Jagger, among others, the event became more elaborate and celebrityfriendly during Diana Vreeland’s tenure with the institute.

The Met Gala transformed from being a charity event to the highly anticipated annual gala it is now, under Wintour’s careful eye. The Met Gala is indeed regarded as one of New York City’s largest fundraising events today. The Costume Institute has raised more than $200 million courtesy of the Met Gala, according to Forbes. Wintour responded to a question on how the event has changed throughout the years by saying, “I was very honoured when they first asked me to become involved because there was such a tradition of Vogue always supporting the Met…. I think we have opened it up to maybe a larger world than the social world that it was when Mrs Vreeland was there. It was more society and fashion, and we broadened that.”

How has the Met Gala’s reach expanded, what really happens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and how does this affect the worldwide fashion industry?

The Met Gala prides out as being fashionable, exclusive, and noteworthy in a commercial world that is overexposed and easily accessible. The brands that walk the ramp consequently receive total attention. Industry insiders claim that the event helps brands stay relevant and establish the most sincere connections with their customers. The clientele that brands are aiming for cannot afford the clothing worn on the red carpet, such as Rihanna’s iconic Guo Pei gown, which took two years to construct. A number of fashion brands leverage the publicity to raise awareness of their ready-to-wear collections. These red carpets are marketing investments rather than revenue-generating tools. Demand for the more reasonably priced outfits is subsequently increased in the brand’s mass market.

Brands outside of the fashion industry too can benefit from the extravagant event. For instance, IBM Watson and Marchesa worked together to design a “smart dress” that Karolina Kurkova wore to the 2016 Met Gala and garnered media attention. Some of the event’s sponsors included Apple, Condé Nast, H&M, Maison Valentino, Farfetch, and Warner Bros. who also gained fame out of the event. In essence, the Met Gala “upscaled” the fastfashion retailer H&M’s image, which was completely unrelated to fine couture. One of the high fashion designers that H&M works with is Rei Kawabuko, who is an honorary co-chair of the gala. The gala showcased the outstanding collections which strengthened the H&M brand and act as a gateway for the high-end businesses they collaborate with.

The luxury fashion business is where the Met Gala had its most noticeable impact. The Oscars of the East Coast is a godsend to the fashion industry in all aspects, from foreseeing a prospective global market to successfully producing revenue from a non-commercialised event.

Think about China: Through the Looking Glass, the 2015 Met Gala. It demonstrated the influence of Chinese motifs, clothes, artwork, paintings, and other creative works on Western fashion. It was an ode to China and everything that it has given to the fashion world. Similar to Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, this theme also sparked discussion about cultural appropriation. However, this event had a positive impact by bringing attention to China’s untapped luxury retail market.

The Chinese luxury goods market has developed rapidly over the recent years, and many anticipate that it will soon overtake the US that is the one of the largest fashion markets in the world. The nation has welcomed international luxury brands, and the proportion of aspiring spendthrift millennial shoppers has been steadily rising. Moreover, Andrew Wu, group president of LVMH Greater China, advised against underestimating China’s luxury market.

Since the Met Gala’s initial establishment in 1948, it has experienced a radical transformation. Every year, a new theme for the gala is selected, which gives designers and prominent figures an opportunity to meticulously design outfits to go with said themes. The Met Gala has grown to be one of the most eagerly awaited events of the calendar year due to its emphasis on fashion, art, and celebrity culture while working towards the greater good of the Costume Institute through its fundraising. The gala has brought to the forefront several unexplored and budding fashion cultures over the years allowing them to see an exponential upsurge in demand and market value and reach their full potential. While the Gala may not be a highly commercialised event like the Oscars or the Super Bowl, the Met Gala holds no less significance in its impact on the world. The event attracts a remarkable amount of attention from the media and publicity, promoting international fashion and art. Designers are given the opportunity to achieve more sumptuous recognition and success in the industry by using the Met Gala as a forum to demonstrate their talent, innovation and creativity. As stated above, the gala also benefits brands and companies outside of the fashion industry by generating build-up and intrigue through powerful collaborations and sponsorships on outfits bringing them to the vanguard of leading headlines. Overall, the Met Gala has a significant impact on industries and global citizens as a whole, that transcends beyond a single evening of glitz and grandeur.

The Met Gala frequently contrasts current fashion trends with historical ones in order to examine how social context affects and shapes them. The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers the public a chance to think about and experience haute couture in a way they never encountered before. It is no longer a niche speciality rather it has become a vibrant and curious area of design that people are excited to explore, experience and take inspiration from. As fashion continues to evolve and change, so too will the future of the Met Gala. It is conceivable that the future will see more innovative fashion choices, expanded themes, and even more diverse guest lists in the years to come. Additionally, with technology playing an increasingly important role in fashion, significant incorporation of digital art and technology into Met Gala fashion choices is positively foreseen. Regardless of what changes may come, one thing is for certain: the Met Gala will continue to be a highly anticipated and influential event in the fashion world for many years to come.
